Established in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the sole TLD intended for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are famous by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to acquire john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level names remained active.
